Some fifty years ago I started collecting cameras. It started when I came across parts of an old box camera in friend’s backyard. It had been crudely taken apart and scattered among stalks of long dried grass up against a fence. Since it was obviously neglected and in need of some care, I asked if I could have it. It was a typical hot August day in California and the sweat trickled down my friend’s forehead as he thought it over. Then with a quick shrug, that comes easy to kids my answer came.
“Sure, but it’ll never work…”
After a quick search, we managed to locate all the bits and pieces. Then with that taken care of, we wiped the sweat away and raced off towards the corner where the ice cream truck tended to hang out. I don’t recall if we actually did manage to get ice cream that day but I did get the camera to work.
A lot has changed since then. The days have rolled over into years and decades and more time than I’d care to admit. But this camera takes me back to that simpler time and place.
In this listing we have an extremely nice example of Kodak no.2 Beau Brownie box camera complete with its original case. The Beau Brownie was produced between 1930-1933 and featured a very decorative covering and attractive art deco front panel.
This camera uses easy to find 120 roll film and its doublet lens does a very decent job of producing a big 6x9 negative. We’ve even cleaned the lens inside and out and freed up the shutter. (The insides always get a bit dusty and dirty after 80 years.)
It’s all ready to for you to load your favorite film into it. After all, there nothing quite like having friends admire a big artistic print in your living room followed by the look on their faces when you tell them that you shot it with a box camera… It brings home the fact that a good photographer can work with anything and sometimes that’s more refreshing than ice cream.
