This is the original first version Braun Super Paxette, a very small 35mm rangefinder camera produced in Germany in 1956. This camera isn’t well known to collectors in general but it’s certainly worthy of more attention. It’s super compact, features a coupled rangefinder, a lovely build quality and some very interesting design features. It looks good, handles well and has a real classic look. If you haven’t played with one you’re missing out on a lot of fun. They’re great... in a small way.

The body is only a bit bigger larger than a Rollei 35 and the loading system is very similar. The Super Paxette has a removable base plate, a folding film pressure plate, and a take up spool similar to the Rollei 35. In case you’re wondering, it uses normal 35mm film and anyone who has worked with a little Rollei will feel at home with this camera.

Not wanting to miss a trick, the designers also fitted it a relatively fast 2.8/45mm lens and managed to squeeze in a film advance lever which is a double throw design just like the early Leica M. A convenient film counter just ahead of the flash shoe helps keep track of your film. And of course the coupled rangefinder makes focusing quick and easy.

The camera has a nice technical detail in that focusing is achieved by moving the entire lens group back and forth. This provides better lens performance (especially up close) than the more common “front cell focus” in which only the front element is turned in or out.

This camera version was produced in 1956. It’s been carefully Cleaned, Lubricated and Adjusted and everything works. The coupled rangefinder functions as it should and focus is smooth. The shutter works well and all shutter speeds are appropriate. The camera has a flash connector. It’s been tested and the flash will fire correctly at any desired shutter speed. (This is of course very convenient for flash fill.)

The 2.8/45mm Staeble Kata lens is an excellent three element design based on the classic Cooke triplet which allows a lovely rendition and an attractive background bokeh. The lens is also in excellent condition. It’s clean and clear. There are no scratches, just some usual cleaning marks and it’s capable of producing lovely photos modern color and B&W films.

It comes complete with an original brown leather case.

All in all, this is a very lovely classic camera and a joy to work with if you are so inclined. Load it with your favorite film and keep it handy for that perfect shot you’ve been looking for.
