What is the most enjoyable camera of the 20th century…? I don’t know about you, but I see the answer almost immediately. I can also feel it between my hands. That evidently doesn’t impress my heart… which is why the heart and the mind are such a good match. They need each other for balance. It’s that perplexing mix that insures we never tire of being close. And when you cradle it in your hands, you’re not simply picking up a camera… it’s more like being reunited with an old friend. A friend with rich sparkling stories of adventure and history, life and death, valor and treachery, lives and passion… And like a faithful friend it will go on and on recording our adventures, our children’s adventures and possibly be still there for our grandchildren to enjoy and to remind them of our life, excursions and adventures.

This camera’s own life is long and colorful. The Retina was a good choice if you had to carry it for weeks or months at a time, over long distances and rough terrain. It also had the advantage of an extremely quiet, reliable Compur shutter which made it an excellent choice for covert use. Many collectors in Europe believe that these early Nagel Retina’s are at as important as the first Leica or Contax cameras because without the Kodak Retina and its universal film cassette, 35mm photography might not have developed into the major photographic format of the post-war years.

This Retina camera has been carefully cleaned, lubricated and adjusted. But the history of these legendary cameras is more complex than that. After WWII, Voigtlander managed to produce a small number of black Bessa rangefinder cameras. Presumably they were constructed from parts that had managed to survive the war and received subtle updates in fit and finish to increase their desirability. If you compare one of these rare postwar cameras side by side to a prewar Bessa, the changes becomes apparent. The later camera is covered with thick Moroccan leather (instead of the original cloth based leatherette), it’s fitted with a black faced Compur shutter (without the Voigtlander logo), the lens is set in a new style mount that allows the use of slide on filters. Also interestingly enough, the rangefinder cover is a few millimeters longer than the original, which hints at the development of a new rangefinder array which was ultimately fitted to the Bessa II.

This model was sold to help finance the restoration of the Voigtlander plant and the development of the new chrome Bessa II.

The shutter curtains look like new, are completely light tight and run very smoothly. The coupled rangefinder which makes focusing quick and easy, works as it should. The image is clean and focusing works smoothly & accurately. The view finder is also clean and bright. The Heliar is well known, well loved and is recognized as a masterpiece of design. It was an expensive top-qualitylens. For decades it was a benchmark of sharpness, but its greatness is not simply defined by high resolution. What photographers and artists love about this lens is the beautiful rendition in the fore and back-ground. It’s something the Japanese refer to as bokeh. Simply said, this lens has a gorgeous bokeh. Open up the lens or narrow the depth of field by getting closer and the focus rolls on and off silky smooth as cream… Soft out of focus foreground moves lovingly into sharp focus on your subject matter and then off again into gently blurred background.
